Biometric control launched in test mode at Ukraine border checkpoints

Biometric control procedures have been introduced in a test mode on the border with Russia with the use of mobile passport readers at main border checkpoints, TSN news service reports.

Such measures were introduced to check the readiness of Ukrainian border guards ahead of the large-scale launch, scheduled for January 1, 2018, according to TSN.

From the new year, a new system for gathering biometric data will start operating at 157 international land border checkpoints and international airports. It allows border guards to keep track of foreign travelers’ stay in Ukraine and is connected to INTERPOL databases.

According to Ukraine’s officials, only those traveling without biometric passports could encounter certain technical issues during border crossing routine.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin announced the launch of a border security biometric system for foreign citizens and stateless persons as of January 1, 2018, which will be followed by the introduction of a system to monitor Russian citizens' travel across Ukraine.
