In a press statement issued Jan 1, the council members also express sympathy and condolences to the families of those slain and of the dozens of wounded, WP reported citing Associated Press.

The council says it reaffirms, in its words, "that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security."

As UNIAN reported earlier, a gunman opened fire on New Year revelers at a packed nightclub on the shores of Istanbul's Bosphorus waterway on Sunday killing at least 39 people, including many foreigners, then fled the scene.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and EU Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn have expressed condolences over the deadly terror attack in Istanbul.
