IMF has no legal restrictions to cooperation with Ukraine amid martial law – statement

The IMF says it hopes for the prompt de-escalation of the situation.

The International Monetary Fund says that it has no legal restrictions to cooperation with Ukraine after the introduction of martial law in the country.

"The IMF does not have any legal restriction to the continuation of cooperation with Ukraine in this situation," IMF Resident Representative in Ukraine Goesta Ljungman said in a statement in Kyiv on November 26, 2018.

"We are following recent developments, including the imposition of martial law, and hope for the prompt de-escalation of the current situation," he said.

Ukraine's parliament on November 26 introduced martial law in Ukraine in response to escalation of the situation in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov after an attack on three Ukrainian boats by the Russian Federation.

Some 276 Ukrainian lawmakers voted in favor of martial law, which will be in effect for 30 days in the following regions: Vinnytsia region, Luhansk region, Mykolaiv region, Odesa region, Sumy region, Kharkiv region, Chernihiv region, Kherson region, Donetsk region, and Zaporizhia region.
