Ex-CEO of Naftogaz Bakai arrested in Moscow until Nov 12 – media

Moscow's Tagansky District Court has arrested former CEO of Naftogaz of Ukraine Ihor Bakai suspected of fraud, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

"The court on October 27 satisfied the investigators' motion and ruled that Bakai must be remanded in custody until November 12," the court told TASS.

Late in October 2017, controversial ex-head of the Ukrainian State Department of Affairs during Leonid Kuchma's presidency, former Naftogaz CEO (April 1998 to April 2000) Bakai was detained in Moscow together with his aide and accountant, the Ukrainian TSN news service reported with reference to its own sources.

The latter two were released on October 31, while the ex-official remained in custody.

Bakai is accused of financial misappropriation by fraud in Russia.

"Victims have filed 10 claims against him, one of them was filed by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov, who allegedly lent Bakai $9 million," TASS wrote.

In Ukraine, Bakai was accused of abuse of power. At the end of 2004, after the Orange Revolution, he was put on the international wanted list, but he managed to flee to Russia where he was granted Russian citizenship.

In Ukraine, the former official is suspected of illegal sale of such Kyiv-based property as Dnipro Hotel, Hotel Ukraine, as well as the Expocenter of Ukraine National Complex.

After Viktor Yanukovych became president of Ukraine in February 2010, Kyiv's Pechersky court freed Bakai of all charges.
