Deputy Head of Investigation Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office Volodymr Shapakin and Deputy Prosecutor of Kyiv region Oleksandr Korniets have been arrested in Kyiv on suspicion of extorting large scale bribes, Mustafa Nayyem, MP from the Bloc of Petro Poroshenko, wrote on Facebook.
"According to my information, a total of about $ 500,000, as well as jewelry and securities, were discovered during the arrest of the officials," wrote Nayyem.
Searches in Shapakin’s office revealed $ 130,000; $ 30,000 and EUR 22,000 was seized in his house, and another $ 170,000 and UAH 500,000 was found in his apartment, as well as documents on deposit investments in amount of UAH 800,000, unregistered firearms, and ammunition.
35 packages with 65 diamonds were revealed during Korniets searches.
It is noted that the operation was supervised by Deputy Prosecutor General Davit Sakvarelidze and Chairman of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Hrytsak. However, Nayyem mentioned that, following the operation, criminal proceedings have been also initiated regarding... Davit Sakvarelidze. The criminal case was opened by First Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine Volodymyr Huzyr on charges of "Raiding a state institution."
