Employees of the SBU Security Service of Ukraine have detained an agent of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service in Cherkasy region, according to the SBU's press center.
SBU agents have established that a native of Samara (Russia), who lived for a long time in Cherkasy region and received Ukrainian citizenship, was recruited back in 1996 by the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation.

In addition, with the outbreak of hostilities in eastern Ukraine, he also recruited mercenaries to participate in combat actions on the side of local terrorist organizations, namely the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic.
Counterintelligence officers of the SBU detained the agent amid a special operation. During a raid on the place of his residence, the law enforcement officers found mobile devices with the supervisors' contacts and computer equipment with proof that he had shared the information with the Russian special services.
The detainee was informed about suspicion of committing crime under Part 1 Article 111 of the Criminal Code ("high treason"). A pre-trial investigation is underway.
