The first solar project in the Chornobyl zone is expected to be commissioned next month, a step forward in the developers’ plan to invest EUR 100 million and build renewables in the radioactive exclusion zone, according to Bloomberg.
Ukraine is preparing the necessary documentation for the construction in the Chornobyl exclusion zone of a special storage facility, which will be required for receiving and storing highly radioactive waste – reprocessed nuclear fuel from Ukrainian nuclear power plants, which in the future will be returned to Ukraine from Russia, the press service of the State Agency for the Exclusion Zone Management said responding to an UNIAN request.
The prime minister of Ukraine said large-scale solar projects to be built in the contaminated area of the nuclear disaster will be selected through clear and transparent bidding rules, according to PV Magazine.
For many, the Chornobyl exclusion zone is plainly associated with the grim computer game "Stalker" or a similar plot of a sci-fi novel by Strugatsky brothers. In fact, things have been getting much better lately. The Zone hosts a number of unique projects the world has not yet seen.
