U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has written a letter to Yulia Tymoshenko reiterating her support for the immediate release of the former prime minister and other former government officials, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
"Our position remains unchanged: you should be immediately and unconditionally released, as well as other former members of your government. It’s a shame that politically motivated prosecutions undermine the progress of democracy that Ukrainians aspire and relations with the United States," Hillary Clinton wrote in her letter to Yulia Tymoshenko.
The letter was sent on October 11 – the one year anniversary of the verdict in the gas case. "The United States continues to be troubled by your trial and conviction. I personally expressed my concern about this to President Yanukovych and other senior Ukrainian officials," she stressed.
"I continue to follow your case closely, so I was happy to personally get information from your daughter Eugenia during her visit to Washington earlier this year," Hillary Clinton said.
The secretary of state also stressed that the U.S. continues to support the democratic aspirations of the Ukrainian people and is carefully monitoring the situation with the upcoming parliamentary elections on October 28. "My visits to Ukraine convinced me that your people want a modern and prosperous democracy in which their rights are respected and voices are heard. Please be assured that the United States remains committed to the idea of helping Ukraine achieve this worthy goal," she said.
