Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman and Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Energy Resources (ENR) at the U.S Department of State Francis R. Fannon have met in Kyiv to discuss an entire range of energy issues, including threats related to the Nord Stream 2 project.

"Ukraine and the United States have a common understanding of how to counteract the implementation of the Russian Nord Stream 2 project, which appears a direct threat to the energy security of Europe and worsens the situation with the diversification of energy deliveries to European consumers," the press service of Ukraine's Cabinet said in a statement on Monday, July 23.

This is the second visit of the high-ranking official of the U.S. Department of State to Ukraine. He visited Kyiv following talks on energy issues in Brussels.

"I would like to reaffirm overall support of the United States in the matter of energy security, above all things. We are committed to further supporting the position regarding the Nord Stream 2 project and the continuation of gas transit through Ukraine. These two components are interconnected and part of the energy security of Europe. The United States will further stand for the diversification of energy supply routes to Europe", the Cabinet's press service quoted the U.S. Assistant Secretary as saying.

During the meeting, the parties noted that Ukraine's gas transit system (GTS) is reliable and capable of providing the amount of transit declared, avoiding any artificial political influences. "Moreover, Ukraine has always stood and still stands ready to invite global companies – market leaders, including from the United States – to managing the GTS and other energy projects in extraction, transportation of resources and implementation of alternative energy projects," Groysman said in turn.
