"I’m ready to support initiatives for the implementation of this plan [the modernization of Ukrzaliznytsia]. I’m ready to destroy any mafia that will come close to Ukrzaliznytsia," the prime minister said.

According to Groysman, the state-owned Ukrzaliznytsia has the potential to see billions in profits, but it is “chronically affected with corruption and inefficiency”. This is a typical problem for large state enterprises, he said.

In this regard, today the new management of the company faces challenges to overcome theinternal sabotage and other obstacles that hinder quick and effective decision-making, Volodymyr Groysman emphasized.

The PM has said he is convinced that the steps undertaken and planned by Ukrzaliznytsia management regarding modernization, purchase of railcars, changes to the system of fuel procurement, the use of the electronic system of public procurement ProZorro should make the company a front-runner and ensure transparency of its operations.

The prime minister also stressed the need to strengthen the company management and making the Supervisory Board of JSC Ukrzaliznytsia professional and independent, in order to evaluate the performance of the management.

The PM also thanked the Chairman of the Board Wojciech Balczun for doing his job and resilience in the face of challenges.
