"Ukraine has paid excessively for [Russian] gas for eight years. And now we've taken [Russia] to court. And we must win," Poroshenko's press secretary Svyatoslav Tsegolko wrote on Twitter, quoting the Ukrainian president as saying.

Ukraine's oil and gas holding Naftogaz of Ukraine, which represents Ukraine, is suing Russia's Gazprom for breaches of two gas contracts. One of them concerns transit shipments of Russian gas to the European Union via Ukraine, and the other is related to purchases of Russian gas by Ukraine.
Mutual claims are estimated at dozens of billions of U.S. dollars.
A court ruling on both contracts is expected in the first half of 2017.
