An explosion has hit a Mercedes as the car was driving on the Brest-Lytovske highway in Kyiv's Svyatoshinsky district.

The blast killed the driver and injured two passengers.

A special police operation has been launched in the capital immediately following the incident, National Police press service reports.

"At about 21:40, police received reports that a Mercedes had exploded in Svyatoshinsky district. When the police arrived at the scene, it turned out that the driver of the car was killed and two passengers were injured. In addition, the vehicle, which was nearby at the time of the explosion, was damaged," the statement reads.

A CSI team, a bomb squad, and investigators are working at the scene to establish all circumstances of the incident.

Police have not yet released any details as per identities of the victims in the blast.
