Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Lt. Gen Serhiy Nayev to the newly created post of Ukraine's Commander of the Joint Forces.

"On my initiative, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on Donbas reintegration. This document formed a new legal basis for deterring enemy aggression in Donbas and, in future, for restoring Ukraine's territorial integrity," Poroshenko wrote on Facebook.

The format of the Anti-Terrorist Operation, earlier widely known as the ATO, will be changed to the Joint Forces Operation (JFO).

The commander of the Joint Forces will be in charge of the forces and means of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations, as well as law enforcement agencies.

Poroshenko said that he had commissioned the newly appointed Joint Forces Commander with strengthening the Ukrainian army so that "it could be not only able to defend but also capable of liberating the occupied areas."
