Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said EU envoys backed the decision to impose individual sanctions against six people involved in the illegal construction of the Kerch Strait bridge.

"This testifies to the inevitability of the punishment for any individuals or legal entities that had, have or will have to do with actions related to the attempt of annexation and temporary occupation of Ukrainian Crimea," he wrote on Facebook on July 18.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin on June 18 called on the European Union to impose sanctions against those responsible for the violation of human rights in Russian-occupied Crimea and for the construction of the Crimean bridge across the Kerch Strait.

On June 19, the EU Council extended until June 23, 2019 sanctions that bar European companies from investing in occupied Crimea and importing goods from the peninsula.
