Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker have met in Kyiv to discuss the situation in Donbas and the importance of extending sanctions against Russia.

"The parties discussed the situation in Donbas. During the meeting, they emphasized the importance of extending sanctions policy against Russia until the end of occupation of Ukrainian territory," the president's press service said.

Poroshenko thanked for strengthening the defense capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and emphasized the importance of continuing close cooperation in the field of security and defense.

The parties also discussed energy security, in particular, in the context of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

"Discussed with Poroshenko our joint efforts to bring #peace4Ukraine & keep pressure on Russia to implement Minsk agreements/respect Ukraine's territorial integrity. Tough circumstances, but we are working together closely," Volker wrote on Twitter on September 14, 2018.
