Ukraine's SBU Security Service has opened criminal proceedings to probe into the issue of Hungarian passports to Ukrainian citizens in Zakarpattia.

"Criminal proceedings have been launched. The SBU is conducting an investigation," Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko told reporters in a comment on the situation, TV Channel 112 Ukraine has said.

According to Lutsenko, the situation with dual citizenship is obvious: such offence entails liability in the form of deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship.

He cited an example of fugitive Member of Parliament Andriy Artemenko, who was stripped of Ukrainian citizenship after it had become known he had dual citizenship.

"If during the investigation the SBU establishes such cases involving other persons, anyone – be it mayors, governors, ministers, pensioners or servicemen, the action will be similar: deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship," he said.

Ukrainian media earlier reported about the issuance of Hungarian passports to Ukrainian citizens at the Hungarian consulate in the town of Berehove in Ukraine's Zakarpattia region. A video was posted showing Ukrainians getting Hungarian passports and taking an oath calling Hungary their homeland.
