German Chancellor Angela Merkel greeted presidential candidate and incumbent President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on reaching the second round of the presidential election.
"Angela Merkel congratulated Petro Poroshenko on reaching the second round of the presidential campaign. The fairness and competitiveness of the electoral process in Ukraine were noted," Poroshenko's press service reported on Monday, April 1.

The parties exchanged views on the further steps, in particular in the framework of the Normandy format, aimed to intensify the peace process on the implementation of the Minsk agreements, release the Kremlin's hostages and implement the initiative to deploy a UN peacekeeping mission to Russia-occupied Donbas.
The parties discussed further bilateral contacts at the highest level. Poroshenko thanked Merkel for her special attention to the situation in Ukraine.
