Danyliuk, 43, was adviser to Zelensky during the latter's presidential campaign. He worked as Finance Minister in Volodymyr Groysman's government. He was dismissed on June 7, 2018, over a dispute with Groysman.

Previously, the post of the NSDC Secretary was held by Oleksandr Turchynov, from December 16, 2014, to May 19, 2019.

Under Ukrainian legislation, the candidacy of the NSDC Secretary along with those of the foreign and defense ministries, the SBU chief and the chief prosecutor shall be appointed (with the parliament's approval) and dismissed by the president of Ukraine.
