Poroshenko says he will hold referendum on NATO membership (Video)
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced during his visit to France his plans to call for a nation-wide referendum on the “fundamental” issue of Ukraine’s potential NATO membership.
However, no specific date for such a vote was mentioned, Ukraine Today reports.
Meanwhile, public opinion in Ukraine has shifted towards supporting Ukraine’s bid to join the alliance in the wake of Russia’s aggressive moves, which started a year ago with the annexation of Crimea and later Russia’s support for militants in eastern Ukraine.
Still, the United States and the EU doubt that Ukraine will become a NATO member state in the short term.
