"It's always difficult to try to predict the future, especially if Russia is involved in this situation," McFaul said.

"But I predict that there will be no war, no peace. There will be uncertainty: a little war, a little peace. The conflict will neither be settled nor resolved. This situation is in the interests of Putin," McFaul said.

"Putin does not need the resolution of the conflict. He wants to continue to put pressure on Ukraine. Probably, to achieve its economic collapse," he said.

"The West is focused on how to reach a resolution. The West wants to resolve the situation, but Putin doesn’t want that. It is beneficial for Putin to continue this situation," McFaul said.
