The election campaign for Ukraine's local elections started on Saturday, September 5, although they will not be held in Crimea and militant-held areas of Luhansk and Donetsk regions, according to the new law, Ukraine Today reports.
The new law also establishes a gender quota for candidates, providing that no less than 30% of female candidates are to participating in elections.
The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on local elections in early July. The law stipulates local elections to be held across the country on October 25. The new electoral system, which has not previously been applied, will be tested during the elections.
