The People’s Party of Ukraine kicks off collecting signatures to cancel elections to local governments that are based on party lists.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, People’s Party leader Volodymyr Lytvyn, head of the eponymous faction in parliament, claimed this to a press conference in Chernivtsi.

“We will begin to collect signatures to cancel elections that are based on party lists. Because, at such elections, they do not have to go to people, but merely to join a high-rating party”, V.Lytvyn claimed.

At the same time, he said: “They say that, in this case, they will buy people in regions. Well, let it be, if we are that cynical. Let them bring money to people, repair school roofs, buy equipment for hospitals, and not spend money on buying places in party lists”, V.Lytvyn said.

“In such a way they could bring, for instance, a donkey to the Kyiv City Council, and claim that it was elected on the quota of this or that faction. With this approach, soon we will not need any elections at all”, he pointed out.

At the same time, according to him, the proportional system of elections may be canceled only when people will press and force politicians to introduce amendments into the electoral legislation. “Without this, neither the Party of Regions, nor BYuT, nor the Communist Party, will ever agree to do that”, V.Lytvyn stressed.
