In an Independence Day interview with First Television Channel (UT-1), Victor Yushchenko said it would take many years and much effort to build and assure the country’s independence, according to the President’s press-office.

He insisted it was important to hold discussions on the country’s past, security, territorial integrity and other important issues.

“Don’t hope to hold a roundtable involving deserving opponents to virtually resolve some problem and never discuss it again. No, you will return to it very soon, for many things can be evaluated and appreciated by the nation, the voters, through their own perception and understanding,” he said.

The President urged Ukraine’s society and political elite to be tolerant during such debates. He also said the majority of Ukrainians saw independence as an integral feature of their country.
