The demographic losses from Holodomor in Ukraine make up 3.5 million people.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, Omelyan Rudnytskiy, representative of the Institute of Demography of Social Studies at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, claimed this to a press conference.

“We managed to develop a structure for assessing the losses, we were the first who did it. We took into account regional losses as well as the ethnic aspect”, he said.

According to the data, listed by O.Rudnytskiy, in particular, 940 thousand able-to-work people (aged 15-60 years old), 262 thousand aged people, and 800 thousand children died in Ukraine in 1933.

Besides, the number of people died during five months of the year 1933 equals to the number of people died over the five previous years (1927-31).

The scientist pointed out that the majority of victims died in the Kyiv Oblast (almost 15% of the population), Kharkiv, Vinnytsya, Cherkassy, Odessa Oblasts, and in the Moldovan Autonomous Republic. The least number of victims was recorded in the Donetsk Oblast.

Liudmyla Slyusar, scientist of the Institute of Demography of Social Studies at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, stressed that Holodomor mostly ruined the Ukrainian countryside, which kept Ukrainian traditions. “The high potential of the Ukrainian countryside was ruined and has never restored. It means, a high potential of child-bearing was destroyed, which reduced the number of population in future”, L.Slyusar emphasized.
