"It [biometric control for foreigners on the border] should be launched no later than January 1 next year. But if relevant agencies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, namely the border service, the migration service, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are ready, I do not rule out it may start working even by the end of this year," Turchynov said after an NSDC meeting in Kyiv on Monday, July 10.

"The procedure for crossing the border with the use of biometric passports and scanning fingerprints will be introduced," he said.

It will be applicable to citizens of all countries.

The introduction of biometric control in Ukraine was first announced by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko on Monday, when he unveiled the results of the NSDC's meeting on that day.

This was mentioned at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council. Such a step will greatly help fight terrorism," Poroshenko said.

As UNIAN reported earlier, Russian citizens will not only have to show biometric passports to cross the Ukrainian order, yet tougher rules will be applied to them: Ukraine plans to introduce preliminary registration for Russian citizens before they visit Ukraine and registration during their stay in Ukrainian territory. All these rules should be articulated by the Cabinet of Ministers in a separate program, Turchynov announced earlier on Monday.
