The gas relations between Ukraine and Russia should be revised, as the January agreements did not bring any stability into this sector of the bilateral relations.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko said this to a press conference on Wednesday.

“Nor Ukraine, neither Russia may be proud of the achievements of January, 2009. Those are relations that led to numerous disappointments”, the President said.

Unfortunately, Victor Yushchenko noted, the agreements that were signed turned into those “cloning problems” – presently, the issue of payments for gas is raised almost every month. “In fact, it is a manual control”, he said, adding that the agreements comprise a number of unclear positions, in particular, concerning the transit conditions (the gas transit volumes were not specified, etc.).

The President stressed that the new gas agreements should have rendered the transit policy more reliable. Instead, it’s evident that a “colossal dose of politics” was allowed in this issue.

“I’m confident that we should return to the topic of gas relations. It must be done as open and public as possible, and, the most important, basing on fair principles”, the President said adding: “Ukraine does not ask for any privileges. We want market conditions – fair and understandable. Only market conditions will minimize the influence of politics”.
