President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko claims that Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko proposed him to support amendments to the Constitution that stipulate election of President by parliament.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko said this to a press conference on Wednesday.

The President noted that a draft Constitution, which was worked out in June-August of 2008, is aimed at dividing the power between two political forces.

“There was the only idea – how to achieve dividing the sphere of influence between the two political forces”, Victor Yushchenko said, adding: “They invited the President to their team in order to implement these agreements”.

According to the President, in particular, the amendments stipulated electing the President by MPs, which would guarantee distribution of authorities between BYuT and the Party of Regions.

“Tymoshenko reported to me about that, I turned down this proposal”, Victor Yushchenko stressed.

He expressed a belief that such amendments would lead the country to the collapse of the year 2004, because, according to Victor Yushchenko, they proposed to neglect the position of the elector.
