“This is the evidence of an intensive political dialogue between our countries,” the President said during the joint briefing with the Governor General of Canada Julie Payette following their meeting in Lviv on Thursday, Jan 18.

“I am grateful to Canada for the firm position of support for our country’ sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence from the very first minutes of the Russian aggression. This support has a significant importance for us. I would like to thank Canadians who did not only express this support, but also coordinate efforts within the international organizations, introduced sanctions, support us in the UN,” Petro Poroshenko emphasized.

The Head of State noted the important role of Canada in the G7 chaired by this country this year.

“The support of Canada in the international organizations is crucial as well,” he said.

“We are grateful that Canada is a co-author of all resolutions put forward by Ukraine for the clear documentation of the aggression and of the program of liberation of the Ukrainian land from the invaders,” Petro Poroshenko stressed.

In turn, the Governor General of Canada said in Ukrainian that she was glad to be in Ukraine and thanked for the warm welcome in the “beautiful city of Lviv”. “Canada and Ukraine have been friends for many years already. We are proud to be the first western state to recognize Ukraine’s independence in 1991,” Julie Payette told.

The Governor General noted that her visit was aimed to underscore Canada’s commitment and support for the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Ukraine. “Our country will remain a close ally, inter alia, during this year when we will preside in the G7. We will keep collaborating with Ukrainian to achieve this goal. We will continue providing assistance so that Ukraine can implement institutional reforms and achieve economic upturn,” she stressed.
