The international watchdog organization Amnesty International noted a deterioration in the observance of human rights in Ukraine in 2010, a spokeswoman for the organization Tatyana Mazur stated during the media presentation of the Amnesty International – 2011 report, according to KyivWeekly.

“We observed a deterioration of the situations in a number of countries. Unfortunately, Ukraine ended up on this list,” Mazur said as quoted by Kyiv Weekly.

Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Nigeria also made it into the organization’s report. According to the report, torture of people detained by the police and other forms of police brutality were among the most widespread violations of the law. Over the course of 2010, the organization also registered cases of deaths of detained individuals due to the lack of medical aid, infringements of refugees’ rights on the part of the law enforcers, discrimination against national minorities and detainment and beating of peaceful demonstrators.
