Ukraine is capable of accomodating up to 50 million medical tourists a year, while currently the country`s spa and recreation facilities host only 4 million guests including the Ukrainians, an expert said Tuesday, according to Xinhua.

"Ukraine could become Europe`s leading medical tourism destination," Vladimir Sokolov, head of the national project "Spas and resorts", told a press conference here.

According to the expert, with a tradition of unique research and evidence-based medical work which could be traced back to the Soviet era, Ukraine has a huge potential to develop medical tourism.

Sokolov added that Ukraine should attract such visitors from Russia, Belarus and other former Soviet republics, as well as those from Europe, Asia and North America.

He said health costs in the country are relatively cheap, and the savings could reach up to 70 percent compared to the prices in the United States or the European Union.
