The Oleksa Hirnyk Foundation has recognized Yulia Tymoshenko as a modern-day political prisoner and named her a winner of the 2012 Award, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
The ex-premier was awarded the title for selflessly upholding the interests of the Ukrainian nation and Ukrainian state, defending democratic values and Ukraine’s European choice in the difficult conditions of political and criminal persecution and imprisonment.
Former Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko and human rights activist Vitaliy Zaporozhets were also named as laureates of the Oleksa Hirnyk Award.
