President Victor Yushchenko insists that legislative immunity must be repealed and thinks this will help law enforcement bodies to restore order in Ukraine, according to the President`s press-office.

Yushchenko said during a regional teleconference in Lviv on Wednesday no society would “defeat the mafia or uproot corruption,” which “gets blessings in the highest offices,” without making everybody equal before the law. He said legislative immunity enabled Ukrainian lawmakers to “concentrate colossal economic interests in their hands” and added that the “450-member caste” was served by the police, prosecution and customs offices, and courts.

The president reiterated his demand that Ukraine’s reelected parliament must also repeal some of the most immoderate privileges enjoyed by its members. He expressed confidence this would make all state officials realize they serve their nation, “not some criminal boss.”

Yushchenko said: “We must spare no effort to repeal legislative immunity, leaving only political immunity. This will normalize relations among law enforcement bodies and this will be a high honor to serve in such bodies to preserve law and order in the country.”
