According to an UNIAN correspondent, the President said this, speaking at the ceremony of presenting state awards on occasion of the Lawyer Day.

“As for the questions concerning bases and contents of the Constitution, or its key principles, without any doubt, let us appeal to people and look for their support”, Victor Yushchenko said.

In the opinion of the President, namely the Ukrainian society must decide in which kind of state it wants to live.

“We should not be afraid of the public discussion of what state we want to make. What is necessary to do that? If we need a referendum, let us hold a referendum”, Victor Yushchenko said.

He pointed out that he did not want to hold this referendum together with the snap poll to the Verkhovna Rada, but, after the election finished, it must be carried out.

Victor Yushchenko also expressed a hope that the Verkhovna Rada will also actively take part in this process. “I guarantee only one thing - nobody in the parliament will adopt any new amendments or new edition [of the Constitution] without discussion, as it was in 2004”, he said.
