“The leaders of the five political forces elected to Ukraine’s new Verkhovna Rada have met today on my initiative”, reads the statement of President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko, according to the President`s press-office.
According to the President’s statement, given preliminary results released by the Central Election Commission and assessments by national and international observers, “I can state that Ukraine’s snap parliamentary election was conducted in a lawful and democratic manner”.
It is now necessary to prepare the Verkhovna Rada of the sixth convocation for its work, form a coalition of deputy factions on the basis of a compromise of political positions and guarantee all necessary conditions for the work of the parliamentary opposition, the President stressed.
“I am glad the president’s position has been appreciated and supported by the key participants of the meeting. They have five days for necessary consultations”, Yushchenko noted.
“I can say approvingly on the basis of their statements that the president’s proposals regarding the passage of a new law on the cabinet of ministers, his right to assume control of law enforcement bodies, the abolishment of legislative immunity and privileges, the introduction of urgent economic reforms, reforms to fight corruption and judicial reforms and the need to draft a new constitution have received political support. I regard this as a foundation for the constructive and productive work of the new parliament. I expect these political positions to be immediately supported by relevant agreements”, the President said.
“I welcome the expressed readiness to create a new atmosphere of political dialogue in the country and appreciate and support proposals aimed at building effective cooperation between government and opposition and creating democratic conditions for the work of the opposition”, Victor Yushchenko emphasized, calling on the participants of the talks to be responsible and start a constructive dialogue. “Ukraine is united. We have received a unique chance for introducing all the necessary changes in the lives of the people and in the state. I believe in its implementation”, he said.
