The United States has not changed its position regarding imprisoned opposition leaders Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Lutsenko, U.S. Ambassador John Tefft has said, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
"Our position is that Mrs. Tymoshenko should be allowed to obtain medical care abroad. What’s more, Tymoshenko should have been released. The same applies to Mr. Lutsenko," John Tefft said in an interview with Korrespondent magazine.
The American diplomat underlined that Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Lutsenko were denied their freedom as a result of politically motivated trials held under the pretext of the battle against corruption. "Who was punished? Were there any leaders of say the Party of Regions? You constantly write about violations, corruption by those in power, but for some reason it was Mrs. Tymoshenko and Mr. Lutsenko that ended up in jail," added John Tefft.
