German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle says the resolution of the case of Yulia Tymoshenko is of symbolic importance for Ukraine’s integration with the European Union, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
"The case of Yulia Tymoshenko has special symbolic significance for Germany," Guido Westerwelle said at a briefing following his meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Leonid Kozhara.
The German Foreign Ministry reported on its website that Guido Westerwelle stressed the need of an urgent humanitarian solution to the case of Yulia Tymoshenko and confirmed that his country is ready to provide the Ukrainian ex-premier with treatment in Berlin.
The central issue discussed by the two top diplomats was Ukraine’s integration with the EU. "We are eager to sign the association agreement with Ukraine in the fall. But this can only be done on the basis of common European values. I want to encourage Ukraine to expressly and consistently implement other necessary reforms. This is especially true for the justice system," said Guido Westerwelle
After an emergency examination last week, doctors from Berlin’s Charité hospital recommended that Yulia Tymoshenko undergo surgery. On July 1, Yulia Tymoshenko’s daughter, Eugenia, said that the family is demanding that the Ukrainian authorities allow the operation to be performed by German doctors.
