The Manuel Carrasco I Formiguera medal is the highest honor bestowed by the Democratic Union of Catalonia party recognizing people who have defended democratic values. Previous recipients include former Czech President Vaclav Havel (2007), President of the European Parliament Hans-Gert Pottering (2008), among others.
The Democratic Union of Catalonia is a party founded in 1931 on the ideals of humanism and Christian democracy. One of its most prominent members was Manuel Carrasco i Formiguera, a fighter for freedom and democracy who was execution by order of Francisco Franco following a fabricated trial.
