President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso stated that the referendum in Crimea set for March 16 is illegal and Russia should stop attempts to annex Crimea.

According to an own UNIAN correspondent in Brussels, Barroso said this during the hearings in the European Parliament on topic: “Incursion of Russia into Ukraine”.

“Any attempt to legalize the referendum in Crimea contradicts to Ukrainian Constitution and international norms. It is clear that the referendum is illegal”, - added the President of the European Commission.
