Verkhovna Rada Committee for Security and Defense chief Anatoliy Hrytsenko is confident that the immunity status must be canceled not only for lawmakers, but also for the President of Ukraine.
According to an UNIAN correspondent, he said to journalists: “I did not sign the draft law on dismissing lawmaker’s immunity because it does not propose any system decision and stipulates to lift only the immunity of lawmakers. I’m convinced that the law must be the one for all – for citizens, for lawmakers, and for the President of Ukraine”.
A.Hrytsenko stressed that canceling the President’s immunity status is even more important that canceling lawmakers’ immunity. He stressed that, contrary to lawmakers, the President issues orders.
“Lawmakers vote and make collective decisions, while the President makes decisions himself. The President is much more tempted to violate the law”, A.Hrytsenko stressed.
“Over the last several years we have seen that the Head of State has been trying to order everybody – the Prime Minister, Ministers, Verkhovna Rada Speaker, Prosecutor General, political parties leaders – which does not always correspond to the legislation”, he said.
“I will sign the draft amendments to the Constitution, and will vote for it, if it stipulates canceling the immunity for everybody and everything: for lawmakers and for the President”, he noted.
