High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission Josep Borrell has urged Russia to fully implement the Minsk agreements and uses its influence on the armed formations it backs.

During a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Brussels, the officials discussed the state of play with regard to the implementation of the Minsk agreements, according to the EU's press release of July 23, 2020.

Borrell commended the efforts of President Zelensky in the implementation of the Minsk agreements and reiterated the EU's continuous, full support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In this regard, he welcomed the latest agreement made at the regular meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group regarding additional measures to strengthen the ceasefire as of July 27, aiming to ensure compliance with a comprehensive, sustainable and unlimited ceasefire and stressed the need for progress on the measures agreed in the Normandy Format Paris Summit in December 2019.

"The High Representative also reiterated the EU's expectation that Russia reciprocates Ukraine's efforts, fully implements the Minsk agreements, and uses its influence on the armed formations it backs," reads the report.

At the same time, the High Representative/Vice-President reaffirmed that the EU's sanctions against the Russian Federation remain in place.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the Trilateral Contact Group on July 22 held a video conference during which the parties agreed on a new, full and comprehensive ceasefire in Donbas, eastern Ukraine.
