Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) Oleksiy Danilov says Ukraine should have only one state language, namely, Ukrainian.

"The issue of language is very important, fundamental for a state. We can have no second [official] language, that is, Russian – and it's not because it doesn't need to be learned. People should know it," he told the Ukrainian Pravda online newspaper in an interview.

"If we are talking about Ukraine, Ukrainian should be the only state language. Should there be a second language in Ukraine? Of course, there should. But this should be English, which kids should learn starting from kindergarten," Danilov said.

The official emphasized Ukrainians should learn English to become part of the civilized world.

"All citizens of Ukraine, if we want to be part of the civilized world, should master and use English. This is a must," he added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, in late May, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov said the law "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language" requires amendments.
