Ukraine has filed a claim at the International Tribunal against the illegal construction of the Kerch Strait bridge between the Russian Federation and Russian-occupied Crimea.

The claim in defense of Ukraine's sovereign interests in connection with the illegal construction of the Kerch Strait bridge by Russia was submitted to the International Tribunal in accordance with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, Ukrainian presidential representative in parliament Iryna Lutsenko has said at a meeting of the Conciliation Council of the parliamentary faction leaders and chairmen of the parliamentary committees.

The instruction as for the claim was given by President Petro Poroshenko, she said.

The construction of the Crimean bridge was condemned by the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, the European Union, NATO, she said.

"We see the world's support of Ukraine in countering the violation of the law of the sea," she said.

She also expressed hope that the consideration of Ukraine's claim would begin by the end of 2018 and "we will wait for the result" in 2019.

As UNIAN reported, an official ceremony to open the Crimean bridge and launch traffic took place on May 15.
