"We have the necessary package of documents for the extradition of ex-President Viktor Yanukovych, former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and other officials of Yanukovych’s regime,” Yarema said.

He said that previously the Prosecutor General’s Office had not able to demand the extradition of Yanukovych for certain legal reasons.

"One of the requirements for extradition is an arrest warrant or [the suspect’s] inclusion on the international wanted list,” Yarema said.

“In the absence of these, requests for extradition cannot be submitted, therefore we did not make appeals to the Russian Federation."

According to Yarema, the announcement of Yanukovych being wanted by Interpol enables the Prosecutor General’s Office to proceed with the extradition process.

"Now we are working on a package of documents in connection with the extradition Yanukovych and his entire team," he said.

Yanukovych is wanted in Ukraine in connection with charges of embezzlement. Earlier, the Ukrainian English-language newspaper the Kyiv Post reported that Interpol had issued a statement saying that it had rejected a Ukrainian request to place Yanukovych, Azarov and other officials on its wanted list for murder, as these charges did not comply with Interpol rules
