Ambassador of Ukraine to Turkey Andrii Sybiha says four citizens of Ukraine have died after the Volgo Balt 214 cargo ship wrecked near Turkish coast.

"Unfortunately, four of our compatriots could not be saved. The rest seven crew members were taken to various hospitals in the city of Samsun," the Ambassador wrote on Twitter on Monday, January 7.

According to Sybiha, there were 11 citizens of Ukraine out of the 13 crew members. The coast guard quickly took appropriate measures off the coast of Turkey.

The consul of Ukraine went to Samsun, he said.

"We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and hope for a speedy recovery of the injured," the diplomat added.

As UNIAN reported earlier, two people died and another four were missing on Monday, January 7, after a ship carrying coal sent a distress signal off the northern coast of Turkey, according to Reuters.
