Ukrainian-US military exercises launched in Lviv oblast of Ukraine
U.S.-Ukrainian command post exercises started with an opening ceremony on Monday, as the first part of the Fearless Guardian 2015 exercises got underway in Lviv region in western Ukraine.
According to the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the ceremony was to be held at the International Center for Peacemaking and Security at the Hetman Petro Sahaydachnyi Army Academy in Starychi village, Yavoriv region, Lviv region.
As earlier reported the joint exercises will involve 290 U.S. paratroopers from the U.S. Army’s 173rd Airborne Brigade, and combat units of the Ukrainian National Guard.
According to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov, 900 soldiers of the National Guard will go through training with the U.S. servicemen.
The exercises will involve the National Guard units Azov, the Serhiy Kulchytsky Battalion, the Jaguar special operations unit, the Omega unit, and other units from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsa regions.
The U.S. instructors will teach the Ukrainian military how to organize defenses, detect the position of the militants, as well as provide medical care and respond to attacks.
As UNIAN reported earlier, on April 17, the U.S. Army 173rd Airborne Brigade's paratroopers arrived in Ukraine to participate in military training with Ukrainian soldiers.
