A 19-year-old resident of a village in the Chernivtsy Oblast (western Ukraine) set fire to 5 chapels and a church.

The Ukrainian Interior Ministry`s Chernivtsi Oblast department disclosed to UNIAN that residents of Ispas village informed police that an unknown person set fire to 5 chapels and a church.

The fire destroyed iconostasis and wooden constructions of the buildings. The preliminary losses are estimated at more than 30 thousand hryvnias [~6.1 thousand US dollars].

Employees of the Vyzhnytskyi regional police department found and detained the 19-year-old local resident within just an hour.

According to deputy chairman of the Vyzhnytskyi Regional Police Department Bogdan Repala, the detained young man set fire to 5 chapels and a church because of a nervous disorder, connected with his family problems. By setting churches on fire, the young man wanted to attract attention of his family to himself.

The fire in chapels was quickly extinguished with the assistance of local residents.

At present the young offender is held in a detention center. The criminal case was brought against him for premeditated destruction and damage of property, the sanction for this crime provides an imprisonment from 3 to 15 years.
