The majority of Ukrainian population does not support Ukraine’s joining NATO because they do not realize external threats to the national security of the state.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, Kyiv Mohyla Academy national university professor Andriy Hirnyk expressed this opinion today, speaking at presentation of “Security of Ukraine – Eventual Threats” survey, carried out by Democratic Initiatives Fund.

According to the data of the survey, some 23% of the Ukrainian population assess external threats to the territorial integrity of the state as “unlikely” and “hardly probable”.

“If Ukrainians are not afraid of anything, why would they need NATO? They do not need to defend from anybody”, A.Hirnyk said about the survey results.

In his turn, national security expert Yevhen Zherebetskiy noted that this attitude of the population to external aspects of national security indicates a certain level of population’s incompetence. “Besides, we are alarmed with activities of some experts producing ordered conclusions that as if there are no external threats around Ukraine. In reality, it is quite the contrary”, Ye.Zherebetskiy said.
