Belgian police are investigating a suspected meat trafficking scandal involving hundreds of tonnes of chicken not deemed fit for human consumption.

1400 tonnes of meat with a false Belgian export certificate were seized on a train between Poland and Ukraine.

It is suspected the meat was due to be transformed into hamburger patties and sausages, for resale on the European market.

The authorities insist there is no evidence that the meat reached any shops, and have dismissed reports that the produce comes from stockpiles of meat contaminated by dioxin in 1999.

Belgian police say the false export certificate claimed the meat came from firms in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
