The boys, aged 13 to 16, were shot in the arms and legs by masked gunmen, in a suspected punishment attack.

The gunmen had lured the boys to a games arcade, where the attack took place.

Last night doctors said that none of them were in a life threatening condition.

The shooting took place in Secondigliano, a suburb of the crime hit southern port city of Naples, home to the local version of the mafia known as the Camorra. The area is a well known haunt for drug dealers.

Detectives said that 30 shots were fired by the group of four men who had arrived on motorbikes.

Police said that three of the youths were related to the owner of the arcade who has several convictions and the other two were also members of local crime families.

A witness interviewed on Italian TV said: "I had just finished watching the game (football) when I heard shooting.

"I looked out the window and saw a group of men on motorbikes shooting at some boys.

"The shooting just went on and on. It was terrible then they escaped on the motorbikes leaving the boys on the ground screaming.

"It was like a scene from hell."

Local police commander Sergio Di Mauro: "Without doubt this was linked to some act within the Camorra and luckily for the boys they are not dead.

"It was clearly a warning to them and someone else probably, they have wounds to their arms and legs but they will live.
