The death toll in the gas explosion at the Skochinsky coalmine in Ukraine’s Donetsk region on Monday rose to nine, the state rescue service of the Coal Industry Ministry said on Tuesday. Six others remain missing, Itar-Tass reported.

The explosion took place at 10:26 Kyiv time sending rocks and a mix of gas and coal spewing into the mine. There were 53 miners underground at the moment of the blast. Thirty-nine made it to the surface. Three miners were found dead and another two were heavily injured and hospitalised.

The Skochinsky mine belongs to the category of extremely dangerous by unexpected outburts of gas, coal and rocks. It was launched in 1975. Since then ten strong explosions hit the mine killing several hundreds of miners.
